Today, on World Water Day, CCAL draws urgent attention to the deteriorating state of the Atewa Forest Reserve and the rivers and streams that originate from it.

Our ongoing mapping of streams migrating from the Atewa Forest Reserve has identified more than 99 streams. Sadly, 83 of these streams are heavily polluted, threatening communities, biodiversity, livelihoods, and the future of Ghana’s water resources. The major rivers connected to the reserve are also facing severe pollution, underscoring the need for immediate and decisive action.
Atewa Forest is a critical ecological and water tower that must be protected for present and future generations. CCAL therefore calls on the Government of Ghana to urgently declare Atewa Forest a national park and strengthen measures to protect its rivers, streams, forests, and surrounding communities from destructive activities and pollution.
On this World Water Day, we urge the government, traditional authorities, civil society, and all citizens to act now to safeguard Atewa Forest and the vital water resources it provides. Protecting Atewa is protecting life.
